a.k.a. the deuce coop!
I never would have dreamed that I would own even one chicken. Now, I've managed to persuade my amazing farmer John to build a new chicken coop to support my chicken addiction! Chicken fever. Poultry passion. Call it whatever you want. It's really crazy how a giving in to a "few chickens" has created a loving and memorable pastime for our family. Going out to check for eggs and walking in the chicken yard in the late evening is such a fun and relaxing time. We all like to do it. I could sit and watch them for hours.
Here is a look at our newest coop. The dimensions are 10 x 12 and that includes some porch space. The tin roof has a standard ridge cap ventilation system. The dutch door on the front also provides air flow for hot days when we open the top half of the door. The retractable roosts will accommodate about 80 hens. We currently have 5 nest boxes with plans to expand as needed. In the old chicken coop we had 8 nest boxes and only 1 or 2 boxes ever had eggs, but in this coop, every single nest box is used.
The whole project took about 2 weeks to complete. It was a family affair, with John at the head of course. We all had a share in assisting with supplies, painting and cleaning up the aftermath. Even Memaw and Papaw were here for the trim work.
Hopefully this coop will see us through many years and many, many more chickens.
